In this picture both the anthers and stigma are visble. This type of oraganism with both female AND male parts are classified as both a perfect flower, since they don't need to travel anywhere in order for the two parts to meet each other, unlike some flowers where they aren't on the same flower. This is the male reproductive part of the flower, which is called the stamen. The stamen includes two specific parts, the filament  which is the 'stem' as seen below, and the anther, which allows the pollen to reside. The pollen contains the male cells, sperm, which will, in the future, allow the flower to produce even more seeds. The female reproductive part of the flower is called the carpel. The carpel contains two parts as well, just like the male reproductive part. The first is the stalk-like part, the 'style' and then the second, is the 'stigma'. The stigma has a sticky residue which allows the pollen to stick to it. Although no

6: How Does Your Garden Grow?

Some abiotic factors that are needed to keep a plant striving and alive is sunlight, water, topography, soil, and climate.  These factors all help the plant get enough physical nutrients. Some biotic factors that plants need to survive are bacteria so it helps the soil be full of nourishing.  The team knew that the plants were competing because we needed to put our plants in the back of the flower bed due to the plants needing to grow as tall as possible and if they were in the front they would block all the rest of the plants. All the plants are competing for sunlight, and space. The winners and losers are determined by which plants survive. Of course, the 'winners' and 'losers' are not always clear cut due to the average eye is not able to identify which plants are striving over others. Mutualism is when two organisms benefit from each other. In this case, the bacteria helps with the roots of the plants getting nitrogen, and the plant helps the bacteria get sugars.

This week I have noticed that the plants have become more thicker at the roots. It also appears as if they have shed leaves as opposed to the normal growth of more leaves, but I think t his is due to the ac tual Brussels sprout plants and how the y will grown taller as opposed to growing wider and leafier. The plants participate in the water cycle due to the transportation of the water that originates in roots but then travels up to the top of the plant /leaves. I think that d ue to the actual plant and the type it didn ' t have the proper cells to fully transport the water to the leaves because the actual roots are long er. The plants trap in or us e the carbon in order to feed and b e s elf-s ustaining . Thes e plants  use up th e carbon to create sugar for thems elv es and to move along the process of photosynthesis . Once th is process is done the carbon is once again recycled into the atmosphere.  N itrogen helps our plants have the proper amount of energy requ

Bios Ximena Larios   My name is Ximena and I have lived in San Jose, California my entire life. I have gardened a few times with my dad, but nothing major. I planted bonsai trees. My dad also knows a lot about planting, he enjoys potting plants and even took a class on the subject, he is incredibly skilled with planting but recently he stopped due to time issues. I however wish to continue to plan stuff and due to this project felt very inspired to do so. Planting is very fun for me too!
Bio:  My name is Kate Kimball and I live in San Jose, California. In my old house we had a big backyard. So behind our pool, in a grass area, we had a little garden. We grew some tomatoes and strawberries. I remember it was hard because sometimes the plants wouldn't grow. But also fun because it was a family bonding experience. My aunt Lauren is a cook, so she knows a lot about growing food and preparing it. So we would make salads with homegrown tomatoes in it when she would come visit.
